Dissecting and modelling galaxy assembly bias

چکیده

Understanding the galaxy-halo connection is fundamental for contemporary models of galaxy clustering. The extent to which haloes' assembly history and environment impact clustering (a.k.a. bias; GAB), remains a complex challenging problem. Using semi-analytic formation model, we study individual contributions different secondary halo properties GAB signal. These are obtained by comparing stellar-mass selected samples that shuffled where galaxies randomly reassigned haloes fixed mass specified property. We explore large range internal environmental measures. find commonly used like age or concentration amount only 20-30 per cent signal, while smoothed matter density tidal anisotropy can account full level (though care should be given specific definition). For "successful" measures, examine occupancy variations associated changes in occupation function parameters. create mock catalogues reproduce GAB. Finally, propose practical modification standard distribution tuned any bias. Fitting parameters our demonstrate corresponding catalogue recovers target as well variations. Our results enable producing realistic directly inform theoretical modelling bias attempts detect it Universe.

Galaxy Assembly Bias on the Red Sequence

Using samples drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we study the relationship between local galaxy density and the properties of galaxies on the red sequence. After removing the mean dependence of average overdensity (or “environment”) on color and luminosity, we find that there remains a strong residual trend between luminosity–weighted mean stellar age and environment, such that galaxies w...

Halo assembly bias and its effects on galaxy clustering

The clustering of dark halos depends not only on their mass but also on their assembly history, a dependence we term ‘assembly bias’. Using a galaxy formation model grafted onto the Millennium Simulation of the ΛCDM cosmogony, we study how assembly bias affects galaxy clustering. We compare the original simulation to ‘shuffled’ versions where the galaxy populations are randomly swapped among ha...

Scale–dependent Galaxy Bias

We present a simple heuristic model to demonstrate how feedback related to the galaxy formation process can result in a scale-dependent bias of mass versus light, even on very large scales. The model invokes the idea that galaxies form initially in locations determined by the local density field, but the subsequent formation of galaxies is also influenced by the presence of nearby galaxies that...

Galaxy clustering and galaxy bias in a Lambda CDM universe

We investigate galaxy clustering and the correlations between galaxies and mass in the ΛCDM cosmological model (inflationary cold dark matter with Ωm = 0.4, ΩΛ = 0.6, h = 0.65, n = 0.95, σ8 = 0.8), using a large, smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulation (SPH, with 2 × 144 particles in a 50hMpc cube). Simulated galaxies can be unambiguously identified as clumps of stars and cold gas a few kpc ...

Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA)

The GAMA survey aims to deliver 250,000 optical spectra (3–7Å resolution) over 250 sq. degrees to spectroscopic limits of rAB < 19.8 and KAB < 17.0 mag. Complementary imaging will be provided by GALEX, VST, UKIRT, VISTA, HERSCHEL and ASKAP to comparable flux levels leading to a definitive multi-wavelength galaxy database. The data will be used to study all aspects of cosmic structures on 1kpc t...
